Uterine Fibroids: Making Your Well-Being a Priority
At the Northwestern Medicine Center for Complex Gynecology, our multidisciplinary team takes an integrative approach to care. The Obstetrics and Gynecology Program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital was ranked No. 9 in the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report, 2024–2025, underscoring our commitment to excellence in women’s health. We treat a variety of complex conditions, including uterine fibroids.
Uterine fibroids are the most common pelvic tumor, affecting nearly 80% of women. These benign (noncancerous) growths in the uterus often appear during childbearing years and rarely develop into cancer. Many women with fibroids do not experience symptoms and may be unaware they have them until a routine gynecologic exam detects an enlarged uterus.
However, for some, the symptoms of uterine fibroids can be quite disruptive. If fatigue, urinary frequency or incontinence, or heavy, prolonged periods affect daily life, treatment may be an option. Northwestern Medicine offers a range of personalized treatment options, from medication to uterine fibroid embolization and minimally invasive surgery.
